Active binaural distance estimation for dynamic sources
نویسندگان
چکیده
A method for estimating sound source distance in dynamic auditory „scenes‟ using binaural data is presented. The technique requires little prior knowledge of the acoustic environment. It consists of feature extraction for two dynamic distance cues, motion parallax and acoustic τ, coupled with an inference framework for distance estimation. Sequential and nonsequential models are evaluated using simulated anechoic and reverberant spaces. Sequential approaches based on particle filtering more than half the distance estimation error in all conditions relative to the non-sequential models. These results confirm the value of active behaviour and probabilistic reasoning in auditorily-inspired models of distance perception.

Author Sampo Vesa Title Studies on Binaural and Monaural Signal Analysis — Methods and Applications Sound signals can contain a lot of information about the environment and the sound sources present in it. This thesis presents novel contributions to the analysis of binaural and monaural sound signals. Some new applications are introduced in this work, but the emphasis is on analysis methods. Th...
متن کاملThe Influence of Dynamic Binaural Cues on Speech Intelligibility
Binaural cues help locating and segregating sound sources and can have a significant influence on speech intelligibility in complex acoustic conditions. Spatial separation of speech and noise maskers improves the speech reception thresholds (SRT). In binaurally ambiguous static listening conditions, however, the binaural intelligibility level difference (BILD) might become very small. Dynamic b...
متن کاملAuditory/visual distance estimation: accuracy and variability
Past research has shown that auditory distance estimation improves when listeners are given the opportunity to see all possible sound sources when compared to no visual input. It has also been established that distance estimation is more accurate in vision than in audition. The present study investigates the degree to which auditory distance estimation is improved when matched with a congruent ...
متن کاملMotion strategies for binaural localisation of speech sources in azimuth and distance by artificial listeners
Localisation in azimuth and distance of sound sources such as speech is an important ability for both human and artificial listeners. While progress has been made, particularly for azimuth estimation, most work has been directed at the special case of static listeners and static sound sources. Although dynamic sound sources create their own localisation challenges such as motion blur, moving li...
